• Read Syllabus and related Welcome files on the blog. Get acquainted with the Blackboard site.
• Read Professor Pease’s column, The Dumbing of America. And view Stephen Colbert’s discussion of the role of college in your life at this URL.
• Order the text online (Folkerts, Lacy & Larabee, The Media in Your Life) at this URL. Start looking through the online text. It’s pretty cool. Order the text IMMEDIATELY so you'll have access to it no later than the end of this week. If you have trouble getting it, let Professor Pease know ASAP.
• Expect a quiz on the syllabus and the introductory materials via email on Thursday. Due Sunday, Sept. 5, midnight.

Who Is Professor Pease?
ReplyDeleteTHAT's a loaded question! And it depends on whom you ask. The short version is this: Professor Pease, 54, is professor and interim head of the JCOM Department @ USU, where he has taught since 1994. He used to be a newspaper reporter, and still writes columns from time to time. He grew up in New England--Maine & Massachusetts--but now spends time on the "other" coast, where he and his wife, JCOM Professor Brenda Cooper, have a house and a boat. Hey everyone! I’m Chelsea and I was born and raised in Utah. I’m a spontaneous twenty year old who can’t seem to be content with the norm. I adore change and I’m constantly finding new things I want to try and conquer. As for right now I’m majoring in Communication in hopes of being a PR Director, but that could change as I’ve also tried my hand at Cosmetology, Business, and Pharmacy. I'm extremely opinionated and I get my jollies out of a good debate. I’m stoked to start this class and dig deeper into all the different types of communication in the media and I’m excited to see all of our different views around each topic! Bring it on class!
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Kelsey Devaney and I'm starting my sophomore year here at USU. I'm from New Jersey and I originally came here as an Interior Design major. After a year of that I have changed my mind and I'm starting to look into PR. I like art, music, literature, working out, and just having a good time. Very much looking forward to this class.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Chasity Woolley. I am a Quality Auditor for a plant that destroys chemical agent. Although I work in a high hazard industry, I have an outgoing personality and am constantly looking for new approaches to communicating with my work force. I plan to use this class to strengthen my technical writing skills, as well as develop some innovative thinking strategies.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Daniel Bodily. I grew up in a small town just north of Logan, Utah called Cove. I work for a Communication company that has nothing to do with this class. I work for L-3 Communications Corporation that makes military communication devices. I am 9 years behind on the collage stuff. But, it has nothing to do with having a boring life, married divorced and married again, to a different wife of course, to one sexy wife. I have worked for two airspace company's, owned a company for 5 years, lost a quarter millions dollars, and have one 4 year old cute little boy. That's my life in a nutshell.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Georgio Romano. I’m from Tooele, Utah. I went to school in Logan for three years, but moved down to Salt Lake City to be closer to my wife’s family and mine. I am currently working on a Spanish Major with intentions of switching to a major in Communications. I volunteered for the student radio station on campus as a disc jockey last year and have become very interested in pursuing a career in that area. I love to skateboard in the summer and snowboard in the winter. I also like to bowl. If I don't become a d.j. I hope to be a professional bowler. I am excited to take this class and learn something new.

I want to major is Public Relations. I am married and have four children (2 girls, 2 boys). I want to prove to all who doubt me that I can do this, that I CAN and I WILL!!

I'm majoring in journalism, and want to have a really cool job when I grow up. (not sure what yet....) I'm excited for this class!

I have a strong love for action sports and a passion for snowboarding. Im excited/scared for this class and I am sure Im not alone.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone! I am Kendra. I live in the wonderful town of Moab, where I am raising my two kids. We lead a very eventful life, whether it is changing a dirty diaper, to watching the sun set over the red rocks, we stay busy. I am very excited about this class, Professor Pease seems to understand the need for humor in life. My plans in life are to earn a degree in business administration, and rule an office. The environment of office life balances out the “hippie” life style I have become accustom to. I hope to get to know you all, and look forward to reading all your different outlooks on the various topics that will follow.

We live here in Logan and I work full time for a company called JJ Cole, which I love! I have been the sugar mama for the last little while so that my husband could do full time school. He will be graduating soon so now I get to start school again after a 2 year break. I haven't done online classes before... so I hope I get the hang of all this before the class ends!

I thought I wanted to be an interior designer but, after a year in the Design Program, I’ve decided I want to pursue a career as a wedding planner so now I plan to major in public resources and am very excited to be starting here in JCOM 1500.

This semester I will be working at Trade Secret and Best Buy, interning at the Riverwoods Conference Center, and attempting full time school online. :/ Wish me luck!! I am pursuing a career as an Event Coordinator (primarily for weddings), and I am very excited to get started!
ReplyDeleteHey everyone!!! My name is Breck Perkins. I grew up in a small farming town in Idaho called Grace. If you've ever been there, I'm sorry. I was thrilled when I graduated high school and moved to the big city... aka Logan. I am currently in my Junior year and have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I originally chose business as my major because, well, isn't that what everyone decides to do when they're clueless? To be honest though, I just don't LOVE it. I want a career where I am excited about what I do each day. I've always been fascinated by journalism and am taking this class to decide if I LOVE it. As for now, I'm currently managing Pac Sun in the good ol' Cache Valley Mall. If you shop there, you've probably met me. I'm the short, loud, blonde girl. :D I'm super excited for this class. ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Jake Proffit. I grew up in West Valley UT. Moved in the middle of high school to Syracuse and graduated from Clearfield high in 2006. I am in my second year here at USU. When I first got here my major was Finance but that has quickly changed. I am now going into a history major with a physical education/coaching minor. I am obsessed with sports. I am constantly reading sports articles, listening to sports radio and watching Sports Center so I am taking a journalism class to see if that is something that I would like doing.
