  1. Yes I did learn a whole lot in JCOM1500 and it definitely has changed the way I look at mass media. I used to think that I was immune to mass media’s effects since I don’t have cable TV and therefore I miss out on all those ads and a lot of the product placement. While taking this course I realized that I didn’t even know all the times that things (or even people) were being sold to me. Now even when I watch the news (online or at a family member’s house) I think I can pick up more and more when the media is painting a picture that seems biased.
I also loved learning about the convergence of different medias. Our family just got some wi-fi sony box thingy, that allows us to watch videos, view photos, and music from the internet on the TV. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if TV and internet were a combination in the very near future. It’s fun to see how the media has evolved and to make predictions on where it will be in the future.
I felt like this was a very well rounded class. There were parts that I enjoyed more than others (like the middle chapters) and I didn’t particularly like learning about the start of mass media. But I think it was right of our professor to have that in there.
I started with the online book and that was so hard to read and the search on it sucked. I am grateful that our professor recommended it since it was the cheapest text out there- I’ve had other professors that recommend a site and it ends up being more expenses than if you’d just purchased the book brand new somewhere else. So that was nice. But the search was bad, and it was hard to read and I didn’t get as much out of it, I think because it was online.
Mid-semester I finally broke down and got the actual book, which allowed me to cross reference and flip back and forth rather quickly. Also books are just easier to take with you than a laptop.
The only thing I would change about the class was the communication part. I felt like this was the only class that I have taken so far from USU that has forced me to actually use my brain. I had to apply concepts and actually know what things meant instead of just read and repeat. That being said, I have no idea who my classmates were. We didn’t really talk to each other or work together. If there was a way to incorporate that into the class I think that would make it lot better. Maybe have the students contribute to Today’s word?? Like actually come up with the post instead of just responding to it? Anyway that was the only thing that I thought was missing.
    Great class!

  2. I loved the class and it was much more in deapth than I had expected, which was nice. I am excited to begin the 2010 class next semester and hope that it is just as informative.

  3. It is always harder to take an online course because there is nobody standing front of you, but Ive learned a lot over the semester and I would recommend this course to anyone.

Also I loved the post about John Lennon today. I've learned sooo much more about him in the past week.
